Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything homeowners and design professionals ask us most, in one place.
Custom closets and the process
Nothing. All of our consultations are free. A designer comes to your home, measures the space and listens to how you use it, then the design is drawn back at our studio and reviewed with you afterward, with no pressure and no obligation.
Yes. We provide detailed 2D and 3D renderings of every space so you can see exactly how your new closet or storage system will look and function. We adjust together until it feels right for you and your budget.
We build with furniture-grade melamine, durable, beautiful and easy to clean, available in a wide variety of colors and finishes, paired with high-quality hardware so every drawer and door works flawlessly for years.
In our own production facility in Downingtown, Pennsylvania. Having our own shop means higher quality, faster turnaround and far more flexibility than companies that outsource.
We work throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, Bucks and Berks counties, plus northern and central Delaware, South Jersey and the Jersey Shore. Each location covers its own territory, so your consultation is booked with the team nearest you.
Absolutely. We invite you to our design studio to touch the materials, test the drawer slides and make your final color, finish and accessory selections.
Materials and finishes
No. All of our shelving is made from industrial-grade 3/4-inch melamine, a denser, flatter panel than the particle board used in flat-pack furniture. It wipes clean and holds hardware screws without stripping.
Water and a bit of dish soap. The surface is stain-resistant, so grease, fingerprints and pet smudges wipe off, and there is no paint or stain to touch up, the color and finish are part of the panel.
We are not waiting on scarce hardwood. Panels are ordered in the finish you choose and built at our own Pennsylvania facility, which is what keeps lead times shorter and prices lower than a comparable solid-wood build.
Bring what you have in mind and your designer will walk through the options with you. Our customers have carte blanche on their projects, our trained design specialists act as a guide, answer questions and suggest what will hold up to daily use.
It usually comes down to light and traffic. Light melamine colors brighten windowless reach-ins and pantries; wood-grain and darker finishes suit walk-ins and offices where the storage reads as furniture. Since every piece is fully customizable you can mix and match wood and melamine, and personal preference and budget always play a part in the decision. Your designer reviews all of the options with you at the free consultation.
Yes. Diplomat Closet Design backs its custom storage with a lifetime guarantee, and the exact written terms and any exclusions are provided with your proposal so you have them before you sign.
The Design Studio
Yes. Scheduling ahead makes sure a designer is free to walk you through finishes and pricing rather than working between calls. Book below or call 610-431-3500.
Monday through Friday, 8:30 to 4. Most visits start no later than 4pm, so let us know which days suit you.
Yes. Design studio visits and consultations are both complimentary.
Most projects start with a free in-home consultation, because storage has to be designed in the actual room. The design studio is where finish, door and hardware selections get made once the layout is drawn. You can do either first.
Please do. Selection meetings go faster when everyone making the decision is in the room.
216 Washington Ave, Downingtown, PA 19335. It is our only location, and our designers travel throughout Pennsylvania, Delaware and South Jersey for in-home consultations.
Our project gallery
Yes. These are photos of completed Diplomat installations, not stock photos or renderings.
Every system is drawn to your room's dimensions and what you need to store. Bring a photo you like to your Free Consultation and your designer can adapt the ideas to your space.
Pricing depends on the dimensions, finishes and accessories you choose. Your designer can discuss your room and budget during a Free Consultation.

Trade program
The program is for design professionals, architects, interior designers and professional organizers. Applications are reviewed, and we ask for at least two forms of proof of trade.
At least two of the following: a link to your business website showcasing your design work, a designer association membership card or certification (ASID, IIDA, CDECA, AIA, IDC, NCIDQ, ASP, CSP, LEED, CID, NKBA or HSR), a current state business license, or a business card showing your design profession. We also collect your business license or tax ID on the application.
It is a trade-only commission program: members can earn up to $1,500 in commission per job. Your project manager confirms the amount for your specific project.
We do. Our design teams measure and draw the project, it is manufactured in our Downingtown, Pennsylvania facility, and installation is handled by Diplomat crews.
