A Pet-Friendly Mudroom: Custom Built-Ins for Furry Family Members

According to U.S. News Real Estate, adding a mudroom to your home not only helps keep things clean and tidy but can also increase its value should you ever decide to sell. Mudroom custom built-ins are particularly sought-after features as they are aesthetically pleasing while also providing functional storage to meet the varying needs of your family.

There are many ways to design a mudroom, but one trend that seems to be growing is the pet-friendly mudroom. Your furry friends are part of the family, too and a pet-friendly mudroom is a great way to centralize and streamline all of your pet-related tasks.

Below are a few ideas to get you started planning your mudroom design.

1. Built-In Wash Station

Perhaps one of the most popular features when it comes to mudroom custom built-ins is a pet wash station. A wash station can add significant value to your mudroom while also helping to mitigate any dirt from outside being dragged through the rest of the house.

If you have a small dog, a farmhouse sink that sits atop built-in drawers and cabinets is a great way to incorporate a multi-functional utility sink that can be used for many different purposes — including washing Fido. If you have a larger dog, you can opt for a corner wash station with tiled walls and a shower base surrounded by shelving and cabinets to keep all your pet washing essentials organized.

2. Built-In Crate

Built-in hidden crates are another must-have for your pet-friendly mudroom. Crates often take up too much space and can be an eyesore in an otherwise well-designed room. However, the mudroom makes for the perfect place to create a built-in crate.

Amongst the other built-in cabinets, you can leave one of the floor-level cabinets empty and fill it with padding or a dog bed. The center of the cabinet doors can then be replaced with metal caging and a lock. This camouflages the crate while still offering a safe space to keep your pet secure.

3. A Privacy Cupboard

A privacy cupboard is similar to a built-in crate, only it’s meant to be more of a comforting space where your pet can go for some privacy as opposed to being locked away. These are great for dogs with anxiety or even if you have cats and want to tuck away their litter. Simply cut an opening in the center or side of a cupboard and then attach a mini rod and curtain so your pet can easily come and go as they please.

4. A Doggie Pantry

A mudroom custom built-in cupboard or armoire is a great way to keep all of your pet essentials organized in one place. Just like you would with a regular pantry, you can use bins, baskets, and glass jars inside to keep everything tidy and easy to access. Everything including dog food, toys, treats, pet cleaning supplies, leashes, and doggie bags can be kept inside so you never misplace a thing.

5. A Dedicated Dog Corner

Modular storage and other organization features can be used to create a special corner in your mudroom just for your furry friend. This can include any combination of built-in cabinets, drawers, open shelves, and wall hooks to keep all of your dog essentials easily at hand. The built-ins can also surround a space designed to perfectly fit your dog’s bed.

6. A Feeding Station

Feeding stations are another popular feature in mudrooms. This is often done by using modular built-ins and then leaving one of the lower cabinet spaces open for a built-in water and food bowl. You can even connect the plumbing to the feeding station so you can have a dedicated water spout for easy filling of the water bowl. You can also install a roll-out rack in one of the cabinets with custom-fit bins for the dog food.
